Elton Jantjies will lead his Emirates Lions’ team out in their pre-season friendly against the DHL Stormers at Newlands on Saturday as a host of top players return to the starting line-up.

Springboks Jantjies, Malcolm Marx, Franco Mostert, Faf de Klerk and Rohan Janse van Rensburg all will start the game while another Bok – Jaco Kriel – is on the bench for the match, which will serve as the main pre-season game for last season’s Vodacom Super Rugby finalists.

But the Lions will be missing two of their stalwarts as regular captain Warren Whiteley misses the game after removing his wisdom teeth this past week and midfielder Lionel Mapoe is still struggling with a hamstring injury.

Still, the team is as strong as the Lions could have made it, with new signing Marvin Orie, who joined the team from the Bulls at the end of last year, and rookie Madosh Tambwe both getting a chance to impress.

The youthful loose trio will also be watched with Ruan Ackermann, Cyle Brink and Fabian Booysen certain to be tested at Newlands.

At the back Janse van Rensburg and Howard Mnisi will form a partnership again, while Courtnal Skosan and Jaco van der Walt are in the back three to help the rookie along.

On the expanded bench there are also a number of regular players who will be familiar, including hooker Akker van der Merwe, former Bull Hencus van Wyk, lock Andries Ferreira, midfielder Harold Vorster, fullback Andries Coetzee and utility back Sylvian Mahuza.
